You’re Only as Good as Your Next Act

Remember when the Secret Service was the best of the best? What happened? Read too many of their own press releases, perhaps?

There’s a lesson for all of us. Even when you have achieved a high status in whatever you’re doing, you’re only as good as your next (not your last) performance—whether it’s restaurant meals, financial services, sports, commerce or the military.

Maybe that’s why people like sports. They know who won and who lost. In politics, war and romance, it’s not always so clear. And yet “on any given day” any team may win.

If being good is important to you—and if it isn’t, maybe you should rethink what you’re doing—you need to constantly challenge yourself to not accept yesterday’s standard as “good enough” for now.

Now is when we live and move and have our being. If you’re not performing your best now, when are you?
