Peace in the Middle East?

It’s hard to win wars.

It’s harder to make peace.

It’s next to impossible to change a culture.

  1. Yes, that’s why our attempts to turn Iraq and Afghanistan into democracies have been fruitless. Even worse than fruitless, we’ve made more enemies.

    • Maybe; maybe not. It’s hard to not want better for people, even if their own leadership doesn’t want it. Look at North and South Korea. Despite no tradition of democracy on that peninsula, democracy (and capitalism) took root in the south and not the north.

Some said we weren’t ready for democracy in 1776. They were partly right; we had to grow into it. So must others.
